Endocrine Essentials

"Your body with its various qualities and abilities is merely borrowed" Rumi

The road map that navigates the human body is long and complex. The remarkable miracle that is human life is supported by a multitude of biological processes. Working synergistically to support life, hormones govern physiological functions and optimal health. Essential to the very existence of life the endocrine system governs reproduction, growth, metabolism, balance, energy, and survival.

Endocrine Glands & Organs

Control & Regulation
Hypothalamus: Links the nervous & endocrine systems; controls the pituitary gland.
Pituitary gland: Releases hormones that regulate many other endocrine glands.
Pineal gland: Produces melatonin to regulate circadian rhythms and sleep.

Metabolize & Balance
Thyroid gland: Controls metabolism, growth & heat production.
Parathyroid glands: Regulate calcium & phosphate levels.
Adrenal glands: Produce hormones involved in stress, blood pressure, metabolism, and electrolyte balance.
Pancreatic islets: Produce insulin & glucagon to regulate blood glucose.

Reproduction
Ovaries: Produce estrogen & progesterone.
Testes: Produce testosterone.

Other Hormone-Producing Organs
Although these organs have primary functions outside the endocrine system, they also release important hormones.
Kidneys, Heart & Liver: Produce hormones that regulate blood pressure, red blood cell production, calcium & fluid balance, and support growth.
Gastrointestinal tract, Adipose tissue & Skin: Produce hormones that regulate appetite, digestion, metabolism, insulin secretion & sensitivity, and vitamin D synthesis in response to sunlight.
Bone & Thymus: Produce hormones that help regulate bone remodeling, mineral & energy metabolism and supports development of T lymphocytes (immune cells) especially in childhood.
